Poland opens terror probe into fire at factory supplying Ukraine drones

Amid suspicion of Russian sabotage, Warsaw eyes link to foreign intelligence services.

Poland has opened a “terror” probe into a fire at a factory supplying parts for drones for Ukraine.

The Polish National Prosecution Office announced the launch of the investigation on Monday. While no details were offered, Russia is widely suspected of running sabotage operations across Europe against facilities supplying Ukraine as it defends itself against Moscow’s invasion.

According to the prosecution statement, the probe has been launched to investigate “participation in the activities of a foreign intelligence service directed against the Republic of Poland and for a terrorist offence, consisting of deliberately causing a fire on the premises of the WB Electronics factory using a device containing flammable materials”.

The WB Electronics factory in Skarzysko-Kamienna, located south of Warsaw, was reported to have caught fire shortly after midnight. The facility manufactures key components for drones which are supplied to the Polish and Ukrainian militaries.

Firefighters spent two hours containing the fire. The country’s Internal Security Agency is assisting the police with the investigation, officials said.

No details have been provided to the public at this stage “due to their specific and confidential nature,” an agency spokesman wrote on social media.

WB Electronics is one of Poland’s largest private defence companies. It manufactures loitering munitions, drones, fire-control systems and military-related communication tools and platforms. The Ukrainian military uses the FlyEye and Warmate drones.

A number of European countries supporting Ukraine have reported incidents that are believed to be sabotage operations by the Russians.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk told reporters in August that a Russian citizen was detained “who had been recruited by Russian services to carry out assassination in Warsaw”.

In another incident, an unexploded drone was discovered at a German airport earlier in August.

Poland has been increasing its security expenditure and military capabilities due to fears of Russian attacks. WB Electronics is a key supplier to the Polish military.

Forbidden planet: was Pluto’s 2006 demotion a big mistake?

Since it was stripped of planetary status, Pluto’s defenders have been fighting the decision – and they’re only getting more passionateTwenty years ago, Pluto got demoted. After a vote by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in August 2006, Pluto was relegated from major planet to dwarf planet status. Our solar system dropped from nine planets to eight. At the time, many scientists were unhappy with the decision. Two decades on, the debate is, if anything, even more polarised.“The definition of a planet they created, you can’t use it at all,” says Philip Metzger, the director of the Stephen W Hawking Centre for Microgravity Research and Education at the University of Central Florida. “It makes the definition of a planet completely non-useful in science.” Continue reading...

Lionel Messi’s international retirement serves as a reminder: Watch him while you still can

The Argentine’s career with Argentina was singular, and his exit is a reminder that all good things come to an endIIt was among the defining moments of the 2026 World Cup: Lionel Messi standing arms akimbo, looking up towards Argentina’s fervent supporters after losing the final. Tears streamed down his face after his team’s embarrassing loss to Spain in what we now know was Messi’s final match wearing that famous Argentina kit.It was not the first time he’d cried at the tournament. There had been tears of joy in Argentina’s opening match, when Messi rolled back the clock to his glory days with a trio of spectacular goals against Algeria. There had been more when his brace against Austria pushed Argentina through to the knockout round as group winners, and even more when his equalizer against Egypt threw la Albiceleste a much-needed lifeline. Later, the world found out that Messi had been struggling all the while with the health struggles of his father, Jorge, a fact that clearly weighed heavily on him as Argentina made a dramatic return to the final in a bid to defend their 2022 title.
