English vocabulary games

Learn English words by playing. Pick a game, and every round draws new words at random from our dictionary, each with its meaning. Race, spell, hop across a pond or run through a 3D meadow: free, in your browser, no account needed.

Your interface language is the language you are learningMeanings and translations appear in the interface language, so they would only repeat the words. Switch the interface to a different language to look up words, translate sentences and see the meanings of your saved words.

How it works

  1. Pick any game on this page. Each one has its own rules, shown before you start.
  2. Every game draws 40 new English words at random from the whole dictionary, only words that also have a meaning in the language of this page.
  3. Answer fast, build combos and earn up to three stars. Play again, or pick another game, for a fresh set of words.

The English vocabulary games

Some games test quick recall, some make you spell, and some are about timing. They all use the same words, so you meet each word in more than one way.

2D games

  • Word Race: Pick the right meaning to dash ahead. Be first to the finish line!
  • Word Whack: Words pop out of the holes. Tap the one that matches the meaning before it hides. 60 seconds!
  • Lightning Rush: 60 seconds. Does the word go with the meaning? Answer fast and keep a streak to set Heylangs AI on fire!
  • Leaf Bridge: Guess the letters to spell the word. Every wrong letter drops a leaf: don't let your player fall in the river!
  • Word Scramble: The letters got mixed up! Tap them in the right order to spell the word for the meaning shown.
  • Memory Match: Turn the cards and find each word with its meaning. Fewer moves, more stars.
  • Match: Pair every word with its meaning as fast as you can. Beat your best time.
  • Blast: Words fall from the sky. Tap the one that matches the meaning before it lands!

3D games

  • Heylangs AI Dash: Run in three lanes! Steer Heylangs AI through the gate that carries the word for the meaning on top. Go fast, grab the golden rings and don't crash!
  • Lily Hop: Hop across the pond on lily pads! Land on the leaf with the word for the meaning, or it sinks and your player goes for a swim. Reach the far bank.
  • Tree Climb: The flood is rising! Climb the giant tree: at each level leap to the branch with the right word. A wrong branch snaps and you slide down.
  • Balloon Pop: Balloons float up carrying words. Pop the one with the word for the meaning before it drifts away. 60 seconds, with combos!
  • Fruit Hunt: Run around the meadow and eat the fruit that carries the word for the meaning. Watch out for the beetle, and for rotten fruit!
  • Maze of Letters: Find your way through the hedge maze and collect the letters of the word in the right order, before time runs out. A wrong letter costs seconds!
  • Acorn Bowling: Four pins carry words. Time your throw as the aim sweeps across the lane, and knock down the pin that matches the meaning!
  • Acorn Sling: Pull back the slingshot and let go! Shoot an acorn at the four signs and knock down the one with the word for the meaning. Three acorns for each word.
  • Fishing: Fish with words swim across the pond. Aim at the water, cast your line and hook the fish that carries the word for the meaning. A wrong fish costs a life!
  • Word Train: Lead a train of words through the garden. Steer to the fruit with the right word and the train grows, but mind the fence, your own tail and the wrong fruit!

How to learn words with games

Say the word out loud

Every game reads the word aloud when it shows. Repeat it after the voice: hearing and saying a word fixes it faster than reading it.

Play short, play often

Five minutes every day beat one long session a week. A round takes about a minute, so it fits between other things.

Meet each word twice

When you answer wrong, the right word is shown. Play the same game again, or try another one: seeing a word in a new game is a second meeting that makes it stick.

Questions about the vocabulary games

Are the English vocabulary games free?
Yes. All the games on this page are free and need no account: pick one and play in your browser.
Where do the words come from?
They are drawn at random from the Heylangs dictionary. A word is only used if it has a meaning both in English and in the language of this page, and the same word or meaning is never used twice in a game.
Do the games work on a phone?
Yes. They work on phones and computers. The 3D games need a browser with WebGL, which almost every current browser has, and every game can take the whole screen.
Do the games save my progress?
The games on this page do not save anything. To keep words and see your progress, save words while you read or listen to lessons, then practise them with Practice and games in your account.
