For most of my life, I was essentially the understudy in a play I never auditioned for.
An intriguing framing. Who exactly was the lead you were understudying for?සිත් ඇදගන්නාසුළු සැකැස්මකි. ඔබ හරියටම ආදේශ කිරීමට සිටියේ කවර ප්‍රධාන චරිතයක් ද?
My father's version of who I was supposed to become, complete with a fully written script.
A script with dialogue, stage directions, presumably even a suggested wardrobe.
Down to the tie color for job interviews, honestly. He left very little to improvisation.
How did the audience respond to your performance in this particular production?
Politely, mostly, though I suspect the reviews were quietly lukewarm behind closed doors.
When did you first suspect you might actually be miscast in this particular role?
Somewhere around thirty, when I realized I had memorized every line but forgotten why I was performing.
A rather existential moment to have mid-monologue, if we are extending the theatrical metaphor.
Precisely. So I decided to formally retire the understudy and audition for my own life instead.
How did that audition ultimately go, if the results have come in yet?
Terrifying, mostly. I had genuinely no script to fall back on for the first time in memory.
Improvisation is considerably harder without years of rehearsal, understandably.
Yet somehow the lines that came out actually sounded like they belonged to me for once.
That, in my professional assessment, sounds like the beginning of a considerably better production.
Reviews are still pending, but at least the performance finally feels genuinely mine.
Growing up, apparently, is simply the long process of firing your understudy and taking the lead yourself.
