For most of secondary school, I equated ambition with accumulating impressive titles.

Every club I joined, every competition I entered, was calculated for its optics.

I rarely paused to ask whether any of it genuinely interested me.

This calculated approach yielded an impressive resume, but a curiously hollow feeling.

A single, offhand comment from a teacher eventually punctured that facade.

She asked what I would pursue if no one were ever going to see it.

I found myself genuinely unable to answer with any conviction.

That unsettling silence prompted months of uncomfortable self-examination.

Slowly, I began peeling away activities that existed purely for external validation.

I began, tentatively, to sit with subjects that offered no external reward whatsoever.

Old habits resurfaced periodically, tempting me back toward optics over substance.

Resisting that pull required a vigilance I hadn't anticipated needing.

That teacher's offhand question, in retrospect, was the single most useful thing anyone ever asked me.

What remained was smaller, admittedly, but unmistakably, finally, my own.
