A studio recently announced a colorized version of a classic noir film.

My first reaction was that this feels like basic sacrilege, since shadows define the film.

On the other hand, could this introduce the film to a whole new younger audience?

Younger audiences should really learn to appreciate the medium as it was intended.

That view sounds a bit elitist, though, since accessibility matters too.

Colorization often flattens the cinematography's original creative intent.

Directors back then chose black and white deliberately for specific emotional effect.

Stripping that choice away misrepresents the artist's true original vision.

Maybe releasing both versions side by side would satisfy nearly everyone involved.

Some studios have already taken that approach with their restored classic films.

I would personally support that compromise far more than replacing the original entirely.

It changed the way I think about entertainment in general.
